| IQ6JU | M2 | This attempt at the WPX contest in the Multi-2 category started more as a fun experiment than a serious effort. Together with my friend Pierluigi, IU0DHV, we decided to jump into the adventure despite our busy work schedules. So, on Friday afternoon, we met up at my radio station with the idea of adding a dipole for 160 meters, alongside the existing 80/160 inverted V vertical. The operating setup was fairly decent... for a single-operator station. Definitely a bit limited for a proper Multi-2 effort. Still, we had two towers ? one 18 meters tall and the other 15 ? both equipped with multiband beams (10-15-20-40 m), a loaded rotatable dipole for 80 meters, which was mounted on the shorter tower, the 80/160 vertical installed at ground level, and the newly added 160-meter dipole mounted on the taller tower. Unfortunately, the weather didn?t help: we had to pause installation due to heavy rain. Despite some RF issues between the two radios ? caused by the close proximity of the antennas ? we decided to go ahead and seriously test ourselves in the Multi-2 category. As is often the case, the first day of the contest was the most productive in terms of QSOs, even under non-stop rain. Considering all the challenges ? the less-than-ideal location of the station (in the middle of an industrial area, surrounded by mountains), the weather conditions, and the fact that it was just the two of us with no dedicated multiplier hunters ? we were quite satisfied with the final result. Propagation gave us a pleasant surprise, with long openings on the high bands both Saturday and Sunday, even during the night ? something quite unusual for our area. In the end, beyond the score, it was a great way to disconnect from work and the usual daily routine. And ultimately, that?s what it?s all about. My participation was part-time, mainly to say hello to friends and give out some points. In my opinion, propagation conditions from southern Europe were generally suboptimal, though slightly better on the second day. A big thank you to everyone for the QSOs! Participating in the wpx contest, given the bad conditions of my antenna setup,always is a good reason to participate for the pleasure to meet old 'big pistols' and new friends. Bad conditions on 20m during the night hours. I tried to reach last year's score. I would like to say many thanks to all stations that I met during the contest.
